What is a good paint colour for fall?

Embrace Autumn’s Warmth with Sherwin-Williams Canoe

Are you looking for the ideal paint colour to capture the essence of Fall in your home? Look no further than Sherwin Williams Canoe – a colour we tested more than once and absolutely love.

What is a warm, earthy paint for autumn?

Canoe fell on our radar when I was looking for an earthy colour for a client who wanted to bring some warmth to her condo. This condo has a ton of beautiful natural light coming in so I knew I needed a colour that would accommodate the different light during the day. However, when you have a wall of windows that brings in a ton of natural light, it helps to use a paint colour with a lower Light Reflectance Value (LRV).

If this may be a new term for you I’ll try to explain it quickly. Every paint colour has an LRV. Lower LRV colours absorb more light, helping to prevent a space from feeling too bright or washed out, and instead create a cozy, inviting atmosphere. On the opposite, we would suggest a colour with high LRV to make a small room look larger and brighter. When you work with us at Luxe Paintworks, you can count on us to help you with that and ensure we take all these variables into consideration.

Sherwin-Williams’ Canoe has an LRV of 34.72, which is low. It was a great choice to add depth and richness to the room while balancing strong sunlight throughout the day.

As you can see in this photo, Canoe delivers a beautiful balance of soft brown undertones with a gentle hint of gold, instantly reminding us of autumn leaves and brisk walks in the forest. This rich yet muted shade was a great choice to balance the dark furniture and works very well with deep oranges, rustic reds, and creamy off-whites.

What’s an adaptable paint colour?

Whether you’re updating your living room, bedroom, or entryway, Sherwin-Williams’ Canoe creates an atmosphere of comfort and timeless elegance. The paint’s ability to complement both bold and subtle accents makes it an interesting choice. However, when using it, we also noticed how the colour can change through the day, or depending on its location.

In the condo, the colour appears slightly different in the morning than it does in the evening, changing its tone through the day without fully giving in to its orange roots. It remains warm, lighter in the morning when the sun is coming in and darker in the evening as the sun sets.

We also used Canoe in a basement with minimal natural light – our goal was to create a cozy nook for the owners and make it warm and comforting. With the low LRV, it made the colour appear a bit darker and it absorbed more light. It was a risk because a low LRV can make a small space appear smaller, but this specific space was very open so the risk was worth taking. We paired it with one of our favourite whites - Sherwin-Williams’ Shoji White - and we loved the result which you can see below. I am also adding a picture of what the room looked like before we did a full redesign - taking out the basement kitchen and repurposing the room as a small office.

Capture the Spirit of the Season

If you want your space to radiate the warmth and coziness that defines fall, Canoe is an exceptional choice. It’s more than just a paint colour — it’s a backdrop for autumn memories and gatherings. So, as the days grow shorter and the leaves begin to turn, consider Sherwin-Williams’ Canoe paint colour for your next makeover. It promises to infuse your home with the heartwarming spirit of fall.
