Looking for the perfect white to paint your home?

Shoji White: Our Designer’s current Favourite—and Maybe Yours Too

Our interior designer has been gravitating toward Sherwin Williams Shoji White for many recent projects. As the go-to team for sourcing paint for all her design work in Moncton, Dieppe and around, we started to wonder: what makes Shoji White such a standout? Today, we’ve asked her a few questions to learn more about this versatile shade—so you can decide if it might be your next favourite white.

What is it about Sherwin Williams Soji White that makes you recommend it time and time again?

When it comes to choosing the perfect paint color for your home, Shoji White stands out as a popular and timeless choice. Named the color of the month back in August 2022 by SW, it has since become a staple in many homes.

First and foremost, Shoji White is a muted white. This means it doesn't have the vibrant and crisp quality of some other whites. Instead, it offers a very soft white with beautiful creamy and yellow undertones. This gives it a warm and welcoming feel, making it an excellent choice for creating a cozy atmosphere in your home. However, don't be mistaken – Shoji White doesn't look yellow. It leans more towards a very soft beige, adding just the right amount of warmth without overpowering the space.

Another reason why I love Shoji White is its versatility. Whether you're using it on walls, trim, ceilings, or cabinets, it fits seamlessly into many different color palettes. This makes it an easy color to work with, no matter your design style.

And finally, I like it because it is timeless. Its neutral quality ensures that it will remain stylish for years to come, making it a smart investment for any home.

Where have you been using it lately?

Recently, we completed a beautiful living room project where we paired Shoji White with SW Dried Thyme to achieve a perfect balance. We wanted to create a moody yet warm living room where it would feel cozy in the evening and inviting during the day.

We chose Dried Thyme for three of the walls and added some beautiful trim to create depth and interest. The rich, moody green of Dried Thyme provided a stunning backdrop that felt warm and inviting. For the fourth wall and the ceiling, we opted for Shoji White in an eggshell finish. This soft, muted white with creamy undertones added just the right amount of warmth without overpowering the space.

To tie everything together, we used Shoji White on all the trims and the chimney mantel in a glossy finish. The versatility and warmth of Shoji White made it the perfect contender to balance the richness of the green walls. It also complemented the grey and beige furniture already in the room, creating a harmonious and cohesive look.

Anything you need to be mindful of when using this colour?

Of course, just like any other paint colour, the undertone can appear different depending on the lighting. If you have a north-facing room, it may appear slightly cooler. If you have a ton of sun coming in the room, it will be warmer and cozier and you may notice the beige or yellow undertones a bit more. It’s important to remember that every colour has undertones – you can’t walk away from it. It’s about finding the right one for your room and what I have learned is that Shoji White is a very stable colour that I tend to recommend frequently.

Any tips to share?

  • You can always test the colour in your own space and under various lighting conditions before committing. I also like to use peel and stick and test the colour at different time of day.

  • Don’t hesitate to use it as a trim colour and challenge the all-white baseboards.

  • Combine with natural textiles and woods for a grounded, contemporary feel.

  • Use it as a whole-home colour for continuity, or as a backdrop for art and statement furnishings.
